While located in Java, the conflict prevented his return to his home country. Efforts to secure safe passage for his transit back to Germany proved unsuccessful, keeping him in Malang, where he remained until his passing.

Dauthendey died at the age of 51. His remains were eventually buried at the Hauptfriedhof Würzburg. While much of the physical evidence of his early life—specifically the family residence in Würzburg—did not survive the century, his work persists through various archives.
