Zamparini entered professional football in 1987 by purchasing Venezia, a club then competing in Serie C2. His intervention prevented the potential bankruptcy of the organisation. Under his ownership, the club underwent a rapid transformation, successfully advancing through the league ranks to reach Serie A. He maintained control of the team until 2002.
The Palermo Tenure
Following the sale of Venezia, Zamparini focused his efforts on Palermo. His stated objective was to secure promotion to the top tier of Italian football, a milestone achieved at the conclusion of the 2003–04 season. His period as owner and director spanned from July 2002 to February 2017, followed by a second stint from July 2017 to December 2018. During this time, he oversaw frequent changes in managerial staff, including the appointment of Diego López to replace Eugenio Corini in early 2017. Internal disputes reached a peak in April 2012, when he received a one-year suspension related to third-party ownership, which was subsequently reduced to five months upon appeal.
Final Divestment
Administrative instability defined the final years of his involvement with Palermo. In February 2017, he announced the sale of his controlling interest to an Anglo-American fund, yet resumed control briefly after the resignation of chairman Paul Baccaglini in July 2017. He eventually appointed Giovanni Giammarva to the chairman position in November 2017. By 1 December 2018, he finalised the transfer of the club to a London-based entity for a symbolic price of 10 euros.
