Mauricio Ricardo Pinilla Ferrera, born 4 February 1984 in Santiago, spent nearly two decades navigating the complexities of professional association football. A striker whose career spanned five different countries, he transitioned from high-stakes European signings to a role in media following his retirement in February 2021, eventually appearing on Chilean television screens as both a presenter and entertainment competitor.
Early Career and European Journeys
Pinilla began his professional path at Universidad de Chile before securing a contract with the Italian giants Inter Milan in 2003. His initial years in Europe were defined by a series of loans and transfers. He moved between AC ChievoVerona, the La Liga side RC Celta de Vigo, and Portugal’s Sporting CP, where he famously recorded a hat-trick against S.C. Braga in May 2005. Further loan spells saw him play for Racing de Santander and Heart of Midlothian, where persistent injuries plagued his performance levels.

During his time at Atalanta in April 2015, he gained attention for a bicycle kick goal against Torino FC. By 2017, he returned to Universidad de Chile and ultimately concluded his playing career with Coquimbo Unido.
International Contributions and Retirement
Pinilla earned his first cap for the Chilean national team in 2003, scoring a header against Peru. He participated in the 2014 World Cup, notably hitting the crossbar in the final minutes against the host nation, Brazil. He was also a member of the squad that secured victory in both the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Copa América. After hanging up his boots in 2021, he pivoted to a career in broadcasting, joining ESPN Chile as an analyst and later moving to Televisión Nacional de Chile.
