Proclaimed king at age fourteen by the Hungarian Estates on 24 January 1458, Matthias Corvinus consolidated power within weeks to become a defining monarch of Central Europe. His reign spanned from 1458 until his death in 1490, marking an era where the Hungarian state transitioned toward centralized administrative control and early Renaissance influence.
Accession and Consolidation
Born in 1443 in Cluj-Napoca, Matthias was the son of John Hunyadi, the Regent of Hungary. Following the 1457 execution of his older brother, Ladislaus Hunyadi, by King Ladislaus the Posthumous, Matthias remained in captivity in Buda. Upon the sudden death of the king, his uncle Michael Szilágyi mobilized support among the Estates, securing Matthias's elevation to the throne.

Matthias established the Black Army, one of medieval Europe's first professional standing forces. He directed this military toward regional dominance, campaigning against the Hussite King of Bohemia, George of Poděbrady, and later Emperor Frederick III. By 1469, he was proclaimed King of Bohemia, and in 1487, he adopted the title Duke of Austria. His conflicts against the Ottoman Empire included the seizure of the border fortress Šabac in 1476.
Governance and Renaissance Patronage
The monarch implemented tax reforms, often setting rates at extraordinary levels to fund his administration and wars, which prompted a rebellion in Transylvania in 1467. Beyond military governance, he prioritized the careers of individuals based on ability rather than status. He fostered the Italian Renaissance in Hungary, most notably by establishing the Bibliotheca Corviniana, which became one of the most significant book collections of the period.
