Masoud Shojaei

Iranian footballer

Masoud Shojaei, born in Shiraz on 9 June 1984, built a professional career as an attacking midfielder that spanned leagues across Asia and Europe. An Iranian international since 2004, he participated in three World Cup tournaments and four AFC Asian Cup competitions, serving as a frequent captain and core strategist for his national side throughout a two-decade playing tenure.

Early Career and Move to the Middle East

Shojaei began his domestic career with Sanat Naft Abadan F.C. before joining Saipa F.C. of Karaj in the Iran Pro League at age 19. His performance during three seasons with Saipa earned him a call-up to the Iranian national under-23 team and an eventual international debut in November 2004. Following the 2006 World Cup, he transferred to Al Sharjah SC in the United Arab Emirates, scoring his first league goal for the club on 3 October 2006 against Emirates Club.

Spanish Tenure with Osasuna and Las Palmas

In June 2008, Shojaei signed a three-year contract with CA Osasuna in Spain, joining compatriot Javad Nekounam. He made his La Liga debut on 31 August 2008. Despite an injury that kept him sidelined for the 2011–12 season, he remained with the club until June 2013, appearing in 112 official matches. He subsequently joined the Segunda División side UD Las Palmas in September 2013, netting a goal in his debut against CE Sabadell FC.

Professional Expansion and Greek Championship

Following the 2014 World Cup, Shojaei competed in the Qatar Stars League with Al-Shahania and Al-Gharafa. In July 2016, he transitioned to Super League Greece, joining Panionios. He later signed with AEK Athens in December 2017, wearing number 24 to honor Hadi Norouzi. During his stint at AEK Athens, he contributed to the team's first national championship in 24 years before departing.

Return to Iran and Transition to Coaching

Shojaei joined Tractor S.C. in August 2018 on a three-year deal, immediately assuming the role of team captain. By the 2019–20 season, he began moving into management, declining an interim head coach position but serving as an assistant to Ahad Sheykhlari. In 2021, he moved to Nassaji, where he secured the 2022 Hazfi Cup Final title following a penalty shootout victory over Aluminium Arak.
