Martin Bouygues assumed the role of CEO of the industrial group founded by his father, Francis Bouygues, on September 5, 1989. Since that time, he has navigated the expansion of the firm across the sectors of construction, media, and telecommunications, while managing a global workforce that totals approximately 130,000 employees.
Early Professional Development
Born in Suresnes in 1952, Martin Bouygues attended the Lycée Gerson and the Collège Stanislas de Paris, obtaining a baccalauréat. He entered the family firm in 1974 as a works supervisor. Following his work on the Forum des Halles site in 1976, he partnered with his brother Nicolas to establish Maison Bouygues, a catalogue real estate business. He joined the board of directors in 1982 and served as chairman and CEO of Maison Bouygues beginning in 1986. Following his brother's departure from the group that same year, Martin became deputy chairperson in 1987 before ascending to the position of chief executive officer in 1989.

During the 1990s, the company diversified significantly. Strategic additions included the founding of Bouygues Telecom in 1994 and the development of media interests such as TF1 and LCI. A defining moment of his leadership occurred in 1997, when he successfully resisted a takeover attempt by Vincent Bolloré. In the following decade, he focused on strengthening existing subsidiaries like Colas and Bouygues Telecom. His management decisions included declining the initial UMTS licence terms in France in 2001 and orchestrating a cooperation agreement with Alstom in 2006. By 2013, the group had grown its annual revenues from roughly 11 billion euros to 32.706 billion.
Philanthropic and External Roles
Bouygues has engaged in various advisory and charitable functions throughout his career. In 2004, he established the Francis Bouygues Foundation, which provides scholarships to high school students to facilitate their entry into higher education. He later supported the United Nations Global Compact in 2006 to emphasize the company's commitment to sustainable development. Beyond his corporate duties, he served as a member of the Skolkovo Foundation Council starting in 2010. His professional performance earned him recognition from the Harvard Business Review, which named him the 6th best performing CEO in the world in November 2017.
