Mart Ustav, born in 1949 in Cherlak, navigated a transition from medical practice to the development of biotechnology enterprises within Estonia. His professional life bridges the gap between academic research and commercial application, grounded in a foundation of molecular biology and chemistry that shaped his subsequent contributions to the national scientific infrastructure.
Academic Foundations and Early Research
Ustav spent his formative years in Tartu, completing his primary and secondary schooling before enrolling at the University of Tartu. He graduated from the Department of Physics and Chemistry in 1972. His academic trajectory led him to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where he defended his doctoral degree in chemistry in 1979 through the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics.

His research portfolio centers on the molecular biology of the papillomavirus. He has studied the mechanisms of viral symbiosis with host cells and the molecular basis for episomal persistence of gene vectors. This work informs his development of new generations of safe DNA vaccines and the architectural design of viral vectors. Since 2007, he has held the position of professor at the University of Tartu's Institute of Technology.
Entrepreneurship and Institutional Leadership
Ustav has operated across both the clinical and commercial spheres, with a history of employment as a gynecologist and an entrepreneur. He held roles at FIT Biotech in Finland between 2000 and 2001. His commercial ventures include leadership positions at Icosagen, where he was active from 2000 through 2008. Beyond his business interests, he served as the vice-president of the Estonian Academy of Sciences from 2009 until 2014.
