Strong gained early notice in British television, appearing as Inspector Larry Hall in Prime Suspect 3 and Prime Suspect 6. He featured in the BBC Two drama serial Our Friends in the North and played Mr. Knightley in a 1996 adaptation of Emma. On stage, he received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for his performance as Orsino in Twelfth Night. In 2014, his work in the play A View from the Bridge earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor.
