Operai e capitale, published in 1966, remains the defining intellectual contribution of Mario Tronti, an Italian philosopher who centered the working class within political theory. As a central figure of the operaismo movement, he bypassed traditional trade union intermediaries to argue for the subjective power of factory laborers, reshaping how Marxist thought understood 20th-century class struggles in the West.
Political Foundations and Operaismo
Born in Rome in 1931, Tronti began his political life as an active member of the Italian Communist Party during the 1950s. He later collaborated with Raniero Panzieri to establish the review Quaderni Rossi. By 1963, he departed to launch the Classe Operaia review. This shift reflected his move toward operaismo, a radical approach that sought to re-evaluate Marxist theory by prioritizing practical engagement with workers over the rigid structures of parties and unions.

Educated at the Sapienza University of Rome, Tronti sustained a long academic career, teaching philosophy at the University of Siena for over three decades. His intellectual trajectory was heavily influenced by the work of Galvano Della Volpe, which prompted him to distance his own research from the established frameworks of Antonio Gramsci. He focused on developing a philosophy of practice aimed at renewing Western Marxism.
Legislative Service and Final Years
Beyond his theoretical work, Tronti maintained a dual life as a politician. During the 1980s, he served as a member of the Italian Communist Party Central Committee. He later served two terms as a member of the Senate of the Italian Republic, first from 1992 to 1994, and again from 2013 to 2018. Tronti died in Ferentillo on 7 August 2023, at the age of 92.
