Early Career and RAI
Born in 1927 in Parma, Lanfranchi pursued formal training at the Accademia dei Filodrammatici in Milan. Upon earning his degree in the early 1950s, he joined the staff at RAI. Working during the formative years of Italian television, he specialized in adapting musical performances for the home screen.

Lanfranchi pioneered the television presentation of opera. His 1956 debut featured Madama Butterfly and introduced the American soprano Anna Moffo to a broad audience; Moffo remained his wife for 17 years. Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, he directed several televised operas including La fanciulla del West, La sonnambula, Turandot, Lucia di Lammermoor, Tosca, and La serva padrona. Later, he expanded his reach with film versions of La traviata in 1968 and a second Lucia di Lammermoor in 1971.
Transition to Feature Film
In 1967, Lanfranchi expanded his professional scope by directing his first western movie, Death Sentence. This marked his entry into mainstream film direction, shifting his focus from the intimacy of studio-recorded opera toward the broader visual requirements of the western genre.
Personal Pursuits
Outside of his career in the arts, Lanfranchi was a dedicated owner of greyhounds. Using the 'El' prefix for his dogs, he managed a notable kennel that included the record-holding racer El Tenor. He resided in the 16th-century Villa Lanfranchi, located in Santa Maria del Piano near Parma, for much of his life.
