Mariana Peñalva launched her professional career at age 17 in the Mexican telenovela Mirada de mujer, portraying the character Andrea. Since that early entry into television, she has built a portfolio spanning acting, filmmaking, and agro-biotechnological innovation, eventually founding both Fuffá Films Producciones and the startup Fungus Sapiens in Mexico City.
Early Career and Education
Born in 1979 in Mexico City to a painter and an opera singer, Peñalva relocated to Cuernavaca during her youth. She received formal acting training under Esther Orozco, and later attended the Centro de formacion Actoral, where she studied with Héctor Mendoza and Raul Quintanilla. Her academic background includes two MBA degrees in Visual Arts and Filmmaking, both earned from universities in France.

Peñalva transitioned into film work initially as a camera double for Angelina Jolie on the set of Original Sin. While living in Europe between 2000 and 2004, she appeared in the independent film Girl with a Pearl Earring. Upon returning to Mexico, she participated in various television programs including Heredera, Tormenta en el paraíso, El Pantera, and Terminales. In 2008, she secured her first starring role in the independent film Written in Blood. Her supporting role in the Alejandro González Padilla film Return saw her work alongside actors including Jaime Camil and Blanca Soto, eventually earning an award at the 2010 Monaco Charity Film Festival.
Filmmaking Ventures
Transitioning behind the camera, Peñalva founded Fuffá Films Producciones, where she produced short films such as In self defence and All 4 Nothing between 2009 and 2011. By 2014, she established Magnificus Films, a production house through which she wrote, directed, and produced shorts including Lettres à Steve, Go Vegan, Dehors, and La petite porte rouge. She has since moved into feature-length projects, having completed post-production on The strange anatomy of dreams and initiated development on The thirteenth seed.
Innovation and Biotechnology
In 2016, Peñalva expanded her professional focus toward agro-biotechnology by founding the startup Fungus Sapiens. Drawing on principles of biomimicry and the circular economy, the venture aims to develop mycelium-based materials and mushroom production systems to address poverty and environmental pollution. She presented the work of this startup at a 2016 TEDx conference.
