In 1983, Weis joined TSR, Inc. as a book editor. Tasked with Project Overlord alongside Tracy Hickman, the duo took creative control when the original author struggled with the material. This project became Dragonlance, characterized by the 1984 game module Dragons of Despair and the novel Dragons of Autumn Twilight. Following the initial success, they produced the Dragonlance Chronicles and the Dragonlance Legends trilogy. Weis departed TSR in 1986 to pursue full-time writing.
Collaborative Ventures and Entrepreneurship
Weis and Hickman continued their partnership as independent authors, producing series such as the Darksword trilogy and the Deathgate Cycle. Their collaboration relied on a division of labor where Hickman handled world-building while Weis focused on character development. Later works included the Sovereign Stone trilogy and the Dragonvarld series. As an entrepreneur, Weis became the CEO and owner of Sovereign Press, Inc. and Margaret Weis Productions, companies established to license intellectual properties for role-playing game adaptations.
