The 1970s saw Gauchet engage deeply with academic publishing. He contributed to the revitalization of the journal Textures alongside Marc Richir and Cornelius Castoriadis. In 1977, he co-founded the journal Libre, which explored intersections of politics, anthropology, and philosophy. This period culminated in 1980 when Pierre Nora appointed him editor-in-chief of Le Débat, a position he occupied until 2020. This role allowed him to shape debates on the tensions within liberal democracy.
Research and Scholarly Recognition
Gauchet joined the Centre de recherches politiques Raymond Aron in 1989. His body of work examines the political consequences of modern individualism and the relationship between democratic structures and religious history. He gained international recognition for his 1985 work, The Disenchantment of the World: A Political History of Religion. His contributions to social sciences have been acknowledged through several honors, including the Prix Ève Delacroix in 1999, the Prix Européen de l'Essai Charles Veillon in 2018, the Guizot Prize in 2019, and his appointment as a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2007.
