The first cancer-oriented robotics program in the world originated at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit under the leadership of Mani Menon. A specialist in urology and robot-assisted surgery, Menon moved from his birthplace of Thrissur, India, to establish techniques that fundamentally altered the clinical approach to treating prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers.
Medical Education and Early Research
Menon pursued his medical training at the University of Madras and Johns Hopkins University. Early in his professional life, he focused on urological research, specifically developing a novel technique to measure androgen receptors within the human prostate. By age 34, he assumed the role of chairman of the urology department at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.

Before his transition into robotics, Menon made significant contributions to the management of kidney stone disease. He helped advance the use of intra-operative ultrasonography to assist in renal stone procedures. Additionally, he devised methods for quantifying oxalate and citrate levels in urine through the application of ion chromatography.
Advancements in Robotic Surgery
As the founding director and the Raj and Padma Vattikuti Distinguished Chair of the Vattikuti Urology Institute at Henry Ford Hospital, Menon pioneered robotic procedures for cancer treatment. His work extended beyond oncology to include the development of techniques for robotic kidney transplantation. These innovations established a new framework for minimally invasive urological surgery.
Professional Recognition
Menon has received numerous accolades for his work in urology and robotics. His awards include the Gold Cystoscope Award in 2001, the Hugh Hampton Young award in 2011, and the Keyes Medal in 2016, all presented by the American Urological Association or the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. He also received the B.C. Roy award from the President of India and the St Paul's Medal in 2021.
