Formative Years and Name Change
Born Malcolm John Taylor in 1943 in Horsforth, West Riding of Yorkshire, he was the son of hotelier Edna McDowell and RAF officer Charles Taylor. His education included time at Tonbridge School and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Upon entering the industry, he adopted his mother's maiden name, McDowell, to comply with British Actors' Equity Association regulations regarding professional naming conflicts.

Following his debut in if...., McDowell appeared in Figures in a Landscape and The Raging Moon. His performance as the antisocial Alex in A Clockwork Orange earned him nominations for a Golden Globe and recognition from the New York Film Critics Circle. He reunited with Lindsay Anderson for O Lucky Man!, which he co-wrote based on his own employment as a coffee salesman, and later Britannia Hospital.
Diverse Character Roles
McDowell expanded his range throughout the 1970s and 1980s, starring in Caligula, Voyage of the Damned, and Aces High. His Hollywood debut occurred in 1979 with Time After Time. Further credits include Blue Thunder, Cat People, and Get Crazy. He also appeared in Star Trek Generations as Dr. Tolian Soran and portrayed Dr. Samuel Loomis in the 2007 remake of Halloween and its sequel.
Television and Voice Work
His television career spans decades, featuring roles in Entourage, The Mentalist, Heroes, and Franklin & Bash. He also starred in Mozart in the Jungle.
