Maksim Opalev

A collection of three distinct Olympic medals in the C-1 500 meter event distinguishes the career of Maksim Alexandrovich Opalev. Born in Volgograd on 4 April 1979, the Russian athlete established himself as a dominant force in sprint canoeing over the course of a decade, securing podium finishes at multiple world championships and elite international competitions.

Early Development and Junior Success

Opalev attended the Volgograd State Academy of Physical Culture to refine his skills. His potential emerged during the 1995 World Junior Championships in Yamanashi, Japan, where, at sixteen years of age, he defeated older competitors to win gold in both the C-2 1000 meter and C-4 500 meter events. By 1997, at the junior championships in Lahti, Finland, he added another title by winning the C-1 1000 meter race.

Professional World Championship Record

Between 1997 and 2007, Opalev earned 20 medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships. His individual gold medal haul included victories in the C-1 200 meter, C-1 500 meter, C-1 1000 meter, and the C-4 200 meter disciplines. While he secured additional gold medals in the C-4 category at the 2003 championships in Gainesville, Georgia, these were later rescinded following a failed doping test by his teammate, Sergey Ulegin.

Olympic Performance and Honors

He secured a silver medal in 2000, followed by a bronze medal in 2004, and finished his Olympic cycle with a gold medal in 2008. In recognition of his contributions to Russian sport, he was awarded the Order of Friendship and the Order of Honour.
