The Akshaya Patra Foundation began its operations in July 2000 under the leadership of Madhu Pandit Dasa, initially serving mid-day meals to 1,500 children in Bengaluru Rural District. Born in 1956 in Thiruvananthapuram, he redirected his professional training as a civil engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay toward extensive humanitarian and social welfare initiatives across India.
Engineering and Social Infrastructure
Madhu Pandit Dasa applied his engineering background to solve logistical challenges in large-scale food distribution. He designed a centralised kitchen model to prepare meals for mass consumption, establishing governance structures based on transparency and accountability. This operational framework allowed the Akshaya Patra Foundation to expand significantly over 25 years. Today, the organization provides meals to 2.2 million children daily in government schools, aiming to ensure that hunger does not prevent students from accessing education.

Following his studies at IIT-Bombay, Madhu Pandit Dasa dedicated his professional career to the mission of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. As the President of ISKCON Bangalore, he combines his technical background with an effort to present ancient Indian cultural ethos within modern scientific and technological frameworks. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir, a cultural and heritage complex, and holds the chairmanship of Basil Woods Institutions.
Awards and Public Recognition
The Government of India conferred the Padma Shri in social work upon Madhu Pandit Dasa in 2016. His work has received multiple distinctions, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT-Bombay in 2010 and the Distinguished International Gandhi Peace Award in 2019, the latter recognizing his role in the distribution of over three billion meals. Additionally, he has received honorary doctorates from Bangalore University and Poornima University for his four decades of service in food security and community welfare. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India awarded the Foundation its Gold Shield Award for financial reporting excellence five consecutive times.
