Born in 1961 in Fatick, Macky Sall became the first president of Senegal born after the nation gained independence from France. Serving as the country's fourth president from 2012 to 2024, his political career spanned decades, transitioning from a geological engineer to a central figure in Senegalese governance, including roles as prime minister and assembly leader.
Early Career and Education
Sall studied as a geological engineer at the University of Dakar before completing further training at the IFP School in Paris. In the late 1980s, he joined the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) and supported Abdoulaye Wade during the 2000 presidential election. His early administrative roles included serving as a special advisor for energy and mines, director-general of the petroleum company PETROSEN, and minister of mines, energy, and hydraulics. In 2003, he transitioned to the role of minister of the interior.

In 2004, President Wade appointed Sall as prime minister, a position he held until 2007. During this time, he oversaw significant infrastructure initiatives, including the Corniche de Dakar motorway and the development of the Blaise Diagne International Airport. Following the 2007 parliamentary elections, Sall served as president of the National Assembly. His tenure in the legislature ended in 2008 after a public conflict with the president regarding the parliamentary oversight of government construction projects.
Presidency and Policy
After founding his own party, the Alliance for the Republic, Sall placed second in the first round of the 2012 presidential election before defeating Wade in the second round. Throughout his twelve-year presidency, Senegal experienced steady economic growth, with the annual GDP rising from $17 billion to $27 billion. His administration focused on large-scale infrastructure, including express trains and a new national stadium. Internationally, he chaired both ECOWAS and the African Union, advocating for debt cancellation and regional security measures.
Controversy and Political Transition
Sall’s later years in office faced domestic criticism regarding the treatment of political opposition and his governance tactics. These concerns culminated in the 2023–2024 Senegalese protests. Following the completion of his term in 2024, Sall has positioned himself for future international roles, including a potential candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General in 2027.
