In 2017, Luiz Gustavo signed a four-year contract with Olympique de Marseille for €8 million. During his first season, he played 56 matches, including every game of the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League run. His performance earned him a place in the Ligue 1 team of the year. He subsequently joined the Turkish club Fenerbahçe in 2019, where he served as a vice-captain and appeared in over 30 matches during his debut season. His career path later led him to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in 2022 and back to Brazil to join São Paulo FC for the 2024 season.
