Early Development and Education
Born in Lyon in 1961 to a Bosnian Yugoslav father and a French mother, Hadžihalilović spent her formative years in Morocco until the age of 17. She returned to France for higher education, studying art history before enrolling at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques, known as La Fémis. She graduated in 1987, debuting with the short film La Première Mort de Nono.

In 1991, Hadžihalilović established the production company Les Cinémas de la Zone alongside filmmaker Gaspar Noé. Their partnership facilitated various creative projects, including her directorial work on the 1996 film La Bouche de Jean-Pierre, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Throughout the 1990s, she provided editing and production expertise on Noé’s films, notably Carne and I Stand Alone, while also directing the erotic short Good Boys Use Condoms in 1998.
Feature Film Trajectory
Her 2004 feature Innocence, inspired by Frank Wedekind’s novella Mine-Haha, earned her the Bronze Horse Award at the Stockholm International Film Festival. She continued to explore distinct narratives with Evolution in 2015 and the English-language film Earwig in 2021. Her 2025 release, The Ice Tower, reuniting her with actor Marion Cotillard, received further international recognition including the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival.
