Born in 1963 in Esch-sur-Alzette, Frieden pursued an international education after attending the Athénée de Luxembourg. Frieden was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1994, where he chaired the finance and constitutional committees. Beginning in 1998, he served as Minister of Justice and Minister of the Treasury and Budget, overseeing the transition from the Luxembourgish franc to the euro. His tenure as Minister of Finance between 2009 and 2013 involved navigating the European debt crisis and contributing to the development of the European banking union. He also held the post of Minister of Defence from 2004 to 2006.
