Louis Garrel

The 2023 César Award for Best Original Screenplay cemented Louis Garrel’s transition from a prominent French screen presence to a writer and director of note. Born in the 13th arrondissement of Paris in 1983, his career has spanned over two decades, evolving from child actor to an adaptable collaborator within international and domestic cinema circuits.

Early Development and Training

Garrel is the son of director Philippe Garrel and actress Brigitte Sy. His exposure to the industry began in childhood, with a debut appearance in Les Baisers de secours at age six. He attended the Lycée Fénelon in Paris before graduating from the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique. This formal training preceded his breakthrough in Bernardo Bertolucci’s 2003 film The Dreamers, where he portrayed a twin sibling alongside Eva Green.

Collaborative Acting Career

Throughout his career, Garrel has maintained long-standing creative partnerships with specific directors. He appeared in multiple films by Christophe Honoré, including Ma Mère, Dans Paris, Love Songs, The Beautiful Person, and Making Plans for Lena. Simultaneously, he acted in several projects directed by his father, Philippe Garrel, such as Regular Lovers, Frontier of the Dawn, A Burning Hot Summer, and Jealousy. His range extends to portraying historical figures, notably Jacques de Bascher in Saint Laurent, Jean-Luc Godard in Redoutable, and Alfred Dreyfus in An Officer and a Spy.

Directorial Pursuits

Garrel expanded his professional scope into writing and directing, starting with short films including Mes copains and Petit Tailleur. His transition to feature-length direction produced Two Friends, A Faithful Man, The Crusade, and The Innocent. These projects often feature him in starring roles alongside frequent collaborators. His work behind the camera has garnered critical recognition, distinguishing his trajectory within the contemporary French film landscape.

Commercial and Extra-Cinematic Work

Beyond film sets, Garrel has participated in various high-profile fashion campaigns. He appeared in Emporio Armani advertisements in 2004 and 2023. In 2014, he became the face of the Valentino Uomo fragrance, later directing a short film for the brand’s Donna campaign in 2015. In 2024, he assumed the role of a menswear brand ambassador for Dior.
