Colonial Service and Early Military Rise
Lon Nol entered the French colonial civil service in 1937, where he served as a magistrate. By 1946, he reached the position of Governor of Kratie Province. He joined the army in 1952, conducting operations against the Viet Minh. After Cambodia achieved independence, he aligned himself with the Sangkum organization, eventually becoming Army Chief of Staff in 1955 and commander-in-chief of the armed forces by 1960.

Before his rise to head of state, Lon Nol occupied several key government positions. He served as defence minister from 1959 to 1966. His political profile increased significantly following the 1966 parliamentary elections, leading to his first term as Prime Minister of Cambodia from 1966 to 1967. He later returned to this role, serving again between 1969 and 1971.
The Khmer Republic and Civil War
In March 1970, Lon Nol led a coup against Prince Norodom Sihanouk. He formally assumed the presidency of the Khmer Republic on 10 March 1972, presiding over a nation embroiled in the Cambodian Civil War. During his tenure, he held the military rank of field marshal. As the political and military situation deteriorated, he fled the country on 1 April 1975, shortly before the fall of Phnom Penh.
Final Years
Following his departure from Cambodia, Lon Nol relocated to the United States. He spent his final years residing in California. He passed away in Fullerton in 1985 and was buried there. Throughout his life, his contributions were formally acknowledged with the Royal Order of Sowathara.
