Born in Rheda-Wiedenbrück in 1941, Liz Mohn navigated a career transition from a dental hygienist apprentice to a primary architect of the Bertelsmann media group. Her influence expanded through the management of shareholder voting rights and leadership roles within the Bertelsmann Stiftung, cementing her status as a central figure in German corporate and civic governance.
Early Career and Bertelsmann Integration
After completing her initial schooling, Mohn pursued an apprenticeship as a dental hygienist before applying for a position as a telephone operator at Bertelsmann. She eventually transitioned to working within the company’s book club. She married Reinhard Mohn in 1982, after his first marriage ended in divorce. Reinhard Mohn, representing the fifth generation of the family firm, adopted her three biological children: Brigitte, Christoph, and Andreas.

Mohn’s formal involvement in the corporate structure began in 1986 when she joined the Bertelsmann Stiftung advisory council. By 1999, she entered the shareholders' meeting of Bertelsmann Verwaltungsgesellschaft, the entity controlling voting rights for the media group. Following her husband's death in 2009, she assumed his responsibilities, including a veto right at the administrative level. She maintained leadership roles until 2021, when she transferred the chairmanship of the Bertelsmann Verwaltungsgesellschaft steering committee to Christoph Mohn.
Philanthropic Initiatives
Her civic engagement spans music, health, and social education. In 1987, she established the Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition to support opera talent, a project inspired by Herbert von Karajan. In 1992, she founded the German Stroke Foundation to improve awareness and prevention of the condition. Additionally, the Liz Mohn Foundation for Culture and Music, established in 2005, manages music education projects and awards scholarships to emerging performers.
