Geely was founded in November 1986 by Li Shufu, who would later transform the company into the second-largest private automobile manufacturer in China. Based in Taizhou, Zhejiang, this entrepreneur has directed significant international acquisitions while serving as a prominent member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Foundations and Automotive Expansion
Li Shufu, born in 1963, pursued education at Peking University and Yanshan University, where he earned a master's degree. His primary industrial vehicle, the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, served as the foundation for his expansive international strategy. On 28 March 2010, he facilitated a deal worth US$1.8 billion to purchase Volvo Cars from the Ford Motor Company. This transaction represented the largest foreign acquisition ever executed by a Chinese automotive firm, accompanied by an additional $900 million in working capital and a strategic commitment to establish domestic production facilities in China.

The scope of Li's influence extends beyond his original manufacturing base through strategic equity holdings in major global automotive entities. In 2018, he secured a 9.7% stake in the German automaker Daimler, establishing himself as its largest shareholder. Further expansion into the luxury segment occurred in September 2022, when his group acquired a 7.6% stake in Aston Martin. By May 2023, he increased this commitment to 17%, positioning Geely as the third-largest shareholder within that company. Furthermore, in March 2020, he explored the possibility of merging Volvo and Geely to consolidate operations under a single global entity.
Innovation and Public Policy
Li has consistently advocated for domestic technological independence, arguing that reliance on foreign joint ventures stifles the innovation, quality, and technical advancement of Chinese manufacturers. He posits that these joint ventures often create complacency by guaranteeing profits for foreign original equipment manufacturers at the cost of local progress. In 2018, he initiated a collaboration with the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp. to develop a line of supersonic bullet trains using proprietary technology. His professional life also involves governance; he is a member of the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC and previously served as a delegate to the 13th National People's Congress.
