Pfohl attended Orchard Park High School, where he competed in basketball and football. After initially committing to Pennsylvania State University, he transferred to the University of Miami. His collegiate football tenure ended abruptly following off-field incidents in 1978, leading to his departure from the institution.

His professional football career included three seasons with the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League, where he served as a guard and tackle and appeared in the 67th Grey Cup. Despite signing with the Green Bay Packers for the 1982 and 1983 seasons, he did not play in a regular-season NFL game due to injuries and roster changes. He concluded his football career in 1984, playing for the Tampa Bay Bandits, Memphis Showboats, and Jacksonville Bulls in the United States Football League.

Entering professional wrestling in 1985 through Championship Wrestling From Florida, Pfohl adopted the ring name Lex Luger.
