Levi Eshkol

Israeli politician, a founder of the Israeli Labor Party and Prime Minister (1895-1969)

Levi Eshkol served as Prime Minister of Israel from 1963 until his death from a heart attack in 1969, becoming the first leader of the nation to die while in office. A key figure in the Zionist movement, he transitioned from agricultural development and infrastructure projects to high-level defense administration and national leadership within the Israeli state.

Early Career and Zionist Foundations

Born in Kyiv in 1895, Eshkol immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1914. His early work focused on agriculture and labor organization, leading him to help establish the Histadrut and the Haganah. He served as the treasurer for the Hapoel Hatzair party and the Agricultural Center. By 1929, he had secured a leadership role in the settlement committee of the Zionist Congress, managing infrastructure and construction efforts.

Infrastructure and Defense Roles

Eshkol founded the Mekorot water company in 1937, serving as its director until 1951. His work expanded to include the construction of water lines throughout the Negev. Parallel to his administrative duties, he remained active in defense, serving on the Haganah high command and managing the organization's treasury during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. He also served as Director General of the Ministry of Defense between 1948 and 1949.

Government and Prime Ministerial Tenure

Entering the Knesset in 1951, Eshkol held various ministerial roles, including Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 1951 to 1952 and Minister of Finance from 1952 to 1963. Upon the resignation of David Ben-Gurion, he became Prime Minister. His tenure included the annulment of military rule over Israeli Arabs and improved relations with the United States. He presided over the government during the Six-Day War and served as Minister of Defense from 1963 to 1967.
