Sir Leslie Lynn Marr inherited the baronetcy of Sunderland at age ten following the death of his father, but pursued a life defined by engineering, painting, and competitive motor racing. Early Education and Military Service
Born in Durham in 1922 to John Lynn Marr and Amelia Rachel, Leslie Marr attended Shrewsbury School before enrolling at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He earned a degree in engineering in 1942. During World War II, he performed duties as a technician for the Royal Air Force. His initial exposure to painting occurred while he was stationed in Palestine.

Upon returning to civilian life, Marr attended Heatherley's Art School in Pimlico. His formal training advanced under David Bomberg at the Borough Polytechnic. Marr became a central figure in the Borough Group, repurposing the top floor of a rented bookshop as a gallery to exhibit the works of fellow students. Following the dissolution of the group in 1950, he continued to paint throughout Britain and continental Europe, eventually living on Arran from 1983 until 1991.
Professional Racing
Marr combined his engineering background with motor racing, competing in Formula One using a private Connaught. He entered the British Grand Prix on 17 July 1954, securing 13th place. His final championship entry occurred in 1955, concluding prematurely due to a brake pipe failure. Outside the championship, he secured a victory at the 1955 Cornwall MRC Formula 1 Race and achieved a fourth-place finish during the 1956 New Zealand Grand Prix.
Collections and Legacy
The works produced by Marr are preserved in numerous institutional collections, including the British Academy, Imperial College Collection, Laing Art Gallery, and Pallant House Gallery. His later years were spent in Norfolk. At the time of his death in Gimingham in May 2021, he was 98 years old.
