The investment of Leopold V as a bishop occurred in 1598, long before he had received formal priestly ordination. Born in 1586 to Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria, he navigated a complex career that balanced high-ranking ecclesiastical administration with secular governance and military command within the expansive Habsburg monarchy during a volatile era of European history.
Ecclesiastical Tenure
Leopold V held significant church positions during the early part of his life. He served as the Roman Catholic Bishop of Passau from 1605 until 1625 and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Strasbourg from 1607 until 1625. In 1614, he assumed the role of Abbot of Murbach Abbey. These roles provided him with power and resources, which he utilized to influence regional affairs, including the financing of the Church of the Jesuit College of Molsheim.
