Leo Nucci

Performing the role of Rigoletto more than 500 times, Leo Nucci established a career defined by his endurance in the demanding Italian operatic repertoire. Born in 1942 in Castiglione dei Pepoli, Italy, he emerged from the chorus at La Scala to become a primary baritone for major houses throughout the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Early Training and Breakthroughs

Nucci received his musical training under the guidance of Giuseppe Marchese. His professional stage debut occurred in 1967 in Spoleto, where he appeared as Figaro in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. Following this, he joined the chorus of La Scala in Milan. His transition to solo performer at the same venue took place in 1975, once again appearing as Figaro.

International Career Development

After gaining prominence in Italy, his appearances expanded across international stages. He made his debut at London’s Royal Opera House in 1978 in the role of Miller in Luisa Miller. By 1980, he reached the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Renato in Un ballo in maschera. His international trajectory continued with his 1981 debut at the Paris Opéra and a 1989 performance at the Salzburg Festival conducted by Herbert von Karajan.

Verdi Repertoire and Performance History

Nucci remains associated with both bel canto and verismo styles, though his work is most closely identified with the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. His expansive list of Verdi roles includes Macbeth, Count di Luna, Giorgio Germont, Rodrigo, Amonasro, Iago, and Falstaff. He has collaborated with notable singers including Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, and Plácido Domingo. In 2016, he returned to La Scala to perform as Rigoletto alongside Nadine Sierra. Later, in 2019, he participated in anniversary celebrations for Verdi in Parma. His active performance schedule continued into his eighties, including an appearance in Xiamen, China, in May 2026.

Recognition and Personal Life

For his contributions to the arts, he received the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Away from the stage, he is married to the soprano Adriana Anelli, and they have one daughter. His recorded appearances include the 1991 Metropolitan Opera Gala, released by Deutsche Grammophon.
