Early Career and Education
The daughter of filmmaker Ali Hatami and actor Zari Khoshkam, Hatami first appeared on screen at age ten in the film Kamalolmolk, playing the titular painter as a young boy. By 1992, she featured in the film Love-stricken. Her path to professional acting was not immediate; she initially studied mathematical physics in high school. She subsequently moved to Lausanne, Switzerland, to attend the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, where she pursued mechanical engineering before switching her focus to French literature. She returned to Iran following the illness and death of her father in 1996, marking the start of her transition to adult roles.

Hatami’s transition to lead roles occurred with the 1997 drama Leila, directed by Dariush Mehrjui, which earned her a Diploma of Honor at the Fajr Film Festival. Throughout the early 2000s, she maintained a consistent presence in Iranian cinema. She received the Best Actress award at the 2002 Montreal World Film Festival for her work in The Deserted Station. Her career continued with significant acclaim for her performance in the 2011 film A Separation, directed by Asghar Farhadi. This role earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival, garnering attention for its realism and emotional depth.

Hatami has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including three Crystal Simorgh awards for Best Actress in 1997, 2009, and 2017. She earned the Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for The Last Step in 2012, a project for which she also contributed to production and costume design. In 2020, she was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
