Formative Years and Academic Background
Born in 1972, Wong spent his early years in a public housing flat in the Marine Parade area. His educational foundation included attendance at Haig Boys' Primary School and Tanjong Katong Technical School. Supported by a Public Service Commission scholarship, he earned a Bachelor of Science in economics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1994, followed by a Master of Arts in applied economics from the University of Michigan in 1995. He later completed a Master in Public Administration at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2004.

Wong initiated his professional career as an economist at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 1997, where he worked during the Asian financial crisis. His civil service path included roles at the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health. Between 2005 and 2008, he functioned as the principal private secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Subsequently, he transitioned to the Energy Market Authority, serving as its chief executive officer from 2009 until 2011.
Political Progression
Entering electoral politics in 2011, Wong secured a seat as a Member of Parliament for the West Coast Group Representation Constituency. He later moved to the Marsiling–Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency in 2015. His cabinet service has been extensive, covering diverse portfolios including Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Minister for National Development, Minister for Education, and Minister for Finance. In 2020, he co-chaired the multi-ministerial committee tasked with managing the COVID-19 pandemic response.
Leadership and Prime Ministership
Following his appointment as Deputy Prime Minister in 2022, Wong became the leader of the People's Action Party fourth-generation team. He was named secretary-general of the party in 2024. Upon succeeding Lee Hsien Loong as Prime Minister in May 2024, he oversaw economic adjustments including the implementation of progressive Goods and Services Tax increases. He led the party to a successful outcome in the 2025 general election.
