The film Entre les murs, known internationally as The Class, secured the Palme d'Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival by blending documentary realism with fictional narrative. This production solidified the reputation of director Laurent Cantet, a French filmmaker whose career examined social structures and labour relations through a unique process of workshop-based character development.
Early Career and Training
Born in Melle in 1961 to parents who were schoolteachers, Cantet pursued studies in photography in Marseille before enrolling at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques in Paris. He graduated in 1986 and began his professional life in television. His early experience included working as an assistant director for the 1994 documentary Veillées d'armes, a project led by Marcel Ophuls concerning the siege of Sarajevo.

Cantet gained critical attention with his 1999 feature debut, Human Resources, a screenplay co-written with Gilles Marchand that examined factory management and labor dynamics. He continued his focus on employment with the 2001 film Time Out, which detailed a man's attempt to hide his unemployment from his family. This interest in societal pressures extended to Vers le sud in 2005, which investigated sexual tourism in Haiti.
Methodology and Social Advocacy
His filmmaking process relied heavily on extensive casting sessions to find non-professional actors whose personal experiences aligned with their characters. This collaborative approach included workshops and rehearsals where actors influenced the final script. Beyond the screen, Cantet demonstrated a long-standing commitment to social causes, including his support for the Collectif des cinéastes pour les sans-papiers and his role as a member of the Collectif 50/50.
Later Projects and Legacy
In 2015, Cantet joined Pascale Ferran and Cédric Klapisch to found LaCinetek, a streaming platform dedicated to films selected by directors. His later work included the 2017 feature The Workshop, filmed in La Ciotat. He died in the 20th arrondissement of Paris on 25 April 2024. At the time of his death, he had been preparing to direct the film Enzo, which was subsequently completed by Robin Campillo.
