The Church of Our Saviour in Copenhagen stands as a defining example of the Dutch Baroque style, featuring a Greek cross plan and prominent Tuscan pilasters. This structure remains the most significant contribution of Lambert van Haven, a Danish-Norwegian architect and painter who served the monarchy during the late seventeenth century, shaping the urban landscape of his era.
Early Career and International Training
Born in Bergen in 1630, Lambert van Haven followed the professional path of his father, the artist Solomon van Haven. In 1653, he embarked on an extensive sixteen-year period of travel throughout Italy, France, Germany, and the Northern Low Countries. During these travels, particularly while residing in cities such as Rome, Padua, and Venice, he acquired technical knowledge in Baroque painting and architecture.

Take the IQ test →Service to the Monarchy
In 1671, King Christian V appointed van Haven as the first official General Building Master of Denmark-Norway. This role granted him authority over the execution of the crown's architectural projects. His responsibilities included the restoration of Frederiksborg Palace following fire damage, where he drew inspiration from Italian and French styles. The resulting Audience Chamber was intended to glorify the monarch.
Public Infrastructure and Design
Van Haven was commissioned by Christian V to design the Nørreport city gate in 1671 to replace a previous structure. Constructed with sandstone ornamentation, it served as a primary entrance to Copenhagen until its dismantling in 1857. His broader architectural portfolio likely includes participation in the design of Charlottenborg Palace and Niels Juel's Mansion on Kongens Nytorv. He also proposed plans for a residential palace on Slotsholmen, though that project never reached completion.
