Early Career and Move to Italy
Born in Stockholm in 1934, Hamrin began his professional football journey with AIK, joining the squad for the 1952–53 season. His performance earned him recognition as the Allsvenskan top scorer in 1954–55. In 1956, he transitioned to Italian football, signing with Juventus. After playing 23 games and scoring eight goals for the club, he spent a productive loan spell at Padova, where he netted 20 goals in 30 appearances.
Tenure at Fiorentina
In 1958, Hamrin transferred to Fiorentina, beginning a nine-year association that solidified his status as one of the club's greatest players. During his time in Florence, he played 289 Serie A games and scored 150 goals, totaling 208 across all competitions. His accolades at the club include the 1960–61 European Cup Winners' Cup—where he finished as top scorer with six goals—alongside two Coppa Italia titles in 1961 and 1966 and the 1966 Mitropa Cup.

Moving to AC Milan in 1967, Hamrin spent two seasons with the club. He secured a Serie A title during the 1967–68 season and played a pivotal role in the 1968 European Cup Winners' Cup, scoring both goals in the 2–0 victory over Hamburg. In the following season, the team clinched the European Cup. He later joined Napoli in 1969 before returning to Sweden to finish his career with IFK Stockholm in 1971, retiring in 1972.
International Representation
Hamrin earned 32 caps for Sweden between 1953 and 1965, scoring 17 goals. He was a central member of the national squad that reached the 1958 FIFA World Cup final held in Sweden. His performance in the semi-final against West Germany, where he scored a goal in a 3–1 victory, is considered a definitive moment in his international career. Sweden eventually lost the final to Brazil 5–2.
Post-Career and Legacy
Following his retirement, Hamrin settled in Florence. He maintained his connection to the sport by working as a scout for AC Milan from 1998 to 2008. He received the UEFA President Award in 2014 and was inducted into the ACF Fiorentina Hall of Fame in 2012. Hamrin died in Florence on 4 February 2024 at the age of 89, holding the distinction of being the last survivor from the 1958 World Cup final match.
