Klaus Meine joined the rock band Scorpions in 1969, four years after its inception, and remains the primary lyricist for the group. Along with guitarist Rudolf Schenker, he holds the distinction of appearing on every studio album released by the band throughout their long tenure in the global hard rock circuit.
Early Influences and Career Development
Born in Hanover in 1948, the German singer began his musical development listening to rock and pop figures such as Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Little Richard, and Roy Orbison. He also drew stylistic inspiration from the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. His professional output centers on hard rock and heavy metal, serving as the frontman for the Scorpions.

During the recording sessions for the Blackout album in 1981, Meine suffered a severe medical crisis involving his voice. Following a recommendation to switch professions, he underwent vocal cord surgeries and subsequent therapy, allowing him to regain his ability to sing. He is credited as the sole writer for numerous tracks including Wind of Change, You and I, and Who We Are, while co-writing hits such as Rock You Like a Hurricane with Herman Rarebell.
Collaborations and Awards
Beyond his work with the band, Meine has collaborated with artists including José Carreras, Uli Jon Roth, and Liel Kolet. His contributions to music and culture have been recognized by the German state of Lower Saxony and the city of Hanover. He received the Cross of Merit First Class of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit in 2000, followed by the Stadtplakette Hannover the same year. Further state honors include the Lower Saxony State Prize in 2014 and the Grand Cross of Merit of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit in 2023, as well as the Leibniz-Ring-Hannover in 2018.
