Kinnosuke Ogura

Japanese mathematician and historian of mathematics

Eight volumes of collected works published in 1974 document the academic output of Kinnosuke Ogura, a mathematician and historian who spent his career advancing Japanese scientific research. Emerging from the Yamagata Prefecture in 1885, he navigated the transition of Japan's institutional frameworks during the early twentieth century to establish his position in logic and foundations.

Academic Foundations and Early Appointments

Ogura completed his studies at the Tokyo College of Science in 1905. He subsequently served as a lecturer at the same institution between 1910 and 1911. His trajectory shifted toward research roles shortly thereafter when he joined the Department of Mathematics at Tohoku Imperial University, where he remained from 1911 until 1917. In 1916, he earned a Ph.D. based on his thesis concerning trajectories within a conservative field of force.

International Research and Institutional Leadership

The years following 1917 marked a shift toward long-term research appointments. Ogura worked at the Shiomi Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, an organization that functioned as the predecessor to the Faculty of Science at Osaka Imperial University, until 1937. His career also included a two-year research period in France beginning in 1919. In 1940, he assumed the role of Chief Director at the Tokyo College of Science, providing oversight for the institution where he had originally received his education.

Professional Engagement and Later Life

Beyond his institutional duties, Ogura engaged with the broader scientific community in post-war Japan. In 1946, he attained the presidency of the Association of Democratic Scientists of Japan. His professional life spanned nearly eight decades until his death in 1962. The publication of his comprehensive collected works more than a decade after his passing consolidated his legacy in the history of mathematics.
