Kenton Couse served an apprenticeship under the architect Henry Flitcroft. This professional relationship proved pivotal, as Flitcroft provided the patronage necessary for Couse to secure several positions within the Office of Works. His administrative responsibilities within the government culminated in his appointment as Secretary to the Board of Works, a role he held from 1775 until 1782.

Beyond his work on Downing Street, which originated from a commission by Charles Townshend in 1756, Couse contributed to various infrastructure and ecclesiastical projects. He served as a co-designer for Richmond Bridge and acted as the surveyor for Chertsey Bridge located in Surrey. His ecclesiastical portfolio includes the Holy Trinity Church in Clapham, which reached completion and was consecrated in 1776.
Private Commissions and Professional Legacy
Couse applied his architectural practice to private estates as well, most notably the design of Normanton Hall in the county of Rutland. Although the structure has since been demolished, it remains part of his recorded body of work. Following a career that spanned several decades of Georgian construction, Couse died on 10 October 1790 at the age of 69.
