Kenenisa Bekele, a long-distance runner born in 1982 in Bekoji, Ethiopia, established himself as a dominant force in athletics by holding both the 5,000-metre and 10,000-metre world records from 2004 until 2020. His career encompasses numerous international titles, ranging from Olympic gold medals to unprecedented achievements in the World Cross Country Championships.

Early Development and Junior Success

Born into a family of barley farmers, Bekele initially considered paths in medicine or the civil service. Encouraged by a physical education teacher, he began training in Bekoji, a town notable for producing elite distance runners. His early international progress was marked by second-place finishes at the 1999 World Youth Championships and the 2000 World Junior Championships. By 2001, he secured his first gold medal at the junior level of the World Cross Country Championships and set a 3000 metres world junior record in Brussels.

Dominance in Cross Country and Track

Between 2002 and 2006, Bekele achieved a feat unmatched in history by winning both the short and long course titles at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships for five consecutive years. On the track, he remained unbeaten in the 10,000 metres from his 2003 debut until 2011. He secured Olympic gold in the 10,000 metres at the 2004 Athens Games and both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the 2008 Beijing Games. In 2009, he became the first man to win both distance titles at a single World Championships.

Transition to Marathon Racing

Bekele expanded his range to the marathon distance, debuting on 6 April 2014 at the Paris Marathon with a course record of 2:05:04. He continued his competitive output with a victory at the 2016 Berlin Marathon, finishing in 2:03:03. In 2019, he returned to Berlin to post a time of 2:01:41, placing him within seconds of the existing world record. His career is supported by his 2012 Bislett medal and a sustained ability to compete at the highest global levels for over two decades.
