Kazys Grinius

Third President of Lithuania from 7 June 1926 until 17 December 1926 (1866-1950)

The political career of Kazys Grinius spanned the turbulent transition from the Russian Empire to an independent Lithuania, culminating in his brief tenure as the third President of the Republic in 1926. A physician by training and a committed humanist, he navigated decades of state-sponsored persecution, international war, and the eventual dismantling of his nation's democratic structures.

Early Activism and Education

Born in Selema in 1866, Grinius attended the Marijampolė Gymnasium, where he began his long engagement with Lithuanian national identity. While studying medicine at the Imperial Moscow University, he chaired a secret society of Lithuanian students and participated in the distribution of illegal literature. Following his graduation, he served as a doctor during cholera outbreaks in Minsk and worked as a ship physician in the Caspian Sea before settling into a medical practice in Lithuania. His political work during this era included helping establish the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania in 1896 and the Lithuanian Democratic Party in 1902.

Political Leadership

Following the declaration of independence in 1918, Grinius emerged as a central figure in the new state. He represented the Lithuanian Popular Peasants' Union in the Constituent Assembly and served as Prime Minister from 1920 until 1922, an office during which he signed a treaty with the Soviet Union. In June 1926, he assumed the presidency. However, his democratic administration lasted only six months. In December 1926, he was deposed in a military coup orchestrated by Antanas Smetona, who utilized the pretext of a fabricated communist plot to justify the seizure of power.

Wartime Resistance and Exile

Throughout the subsequent occupations of Lithuania by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, Grinius maintained a principled stance against foreign control. During the German occupation in 1941, he refused to collaborate with the authorities. During this period, he acted to save individuals from the Holocaust, an effort that later earned him the status of Righteous Among the Nations and the Lithuanian Life Saving Cross. In 1944, as Soviet forces reoccupied the country, he fled to the West. He arrived in the United States in 1947, spending his final years in Chicago until his death in 1950.
