Early Development and Education
Born in Ojiya, Japan, in 1952, Torishima spent his youth as an avid reader to navigate a rural environment he found stifling. His academic path led him to Keio University, where he selected the Faculty of Law due to parental constraints on funding and a practical focus on future employability. This period in Tokyo provided his first access to intellectual circles that differed significantly from his hometown.

Upon joining Shueisha in 1976, Torishima was assigned to the editorial department of Weekly Shōnen Jump. His early work involved managing Buronson and Shinji Hiramatsu’s Doberman Deka, a project that taught him to prioritize reader rankings and structural narrative coherence. He eventually oversaw the magazine as editor-in-chief from 1996 to 2001, contributing to its record circulation of 6.53 million copies in 1995.
Collaboration with Akira Toriyama
Torishima discovered Akira Toriyama after reviewing a submission for the Newcomer Award. Their professional partnership spanned the creation of Dr. Slump and the initial run of Dragon Ball. The development of these titles was marked by a trial-and-error process, including the rejection of 500 pages of work before the launch of Dr. Slump. Torishima pushed for the pivot toward kung fu themes that eventually birthed Dragon Ball.
Corporate Leadership
Beyond his editorial influence, Torishima held several executive roles, including senior managing director at Shueisha and director at Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions. He later moved to Hakusensha, serving as president and representative director before transitioning to an advisory role. In late 2022, he joined the Bushiroad organization, where he currently serves as an outside director.
