Born in Haywards Heath in 1992, Kaya Scodelario established her acting career by securing a prominent role in the E4 television series Skins at age 14. Despite lacking prior professional experience, her portrayal of Effy Stonem garnered significant industry attention, eventually leading to a diverse filmography spanning thriller, horror, and biographical drama productions internationally.
Early Development and Television Beginnings
Raised in London by her mother, Scodelario attended Bishop Douglass School and Arts and Media School Islington. She sought solace in school drama during her teenage years. In 2006, she auditioned for the first series of Skins. While she initially doubted her prospects due to her youth, she secured the role of Effy Stonem. Her character evolved from a supporting role in the first series to a central figure in the third and fourth series. Her final day of filming for the original run concluded on 18 November 2009. She later reprised the character for the 2013 two-part episode Fire, which depicted Effy’s transition into adult life.

Franchise Work and International Projects
In 2013, she joined the cast of the Channel 4 drama series Southcliffe. Her involvement in major film franchises increased when she signed on as Teresa in the Maze Runner series, released between 2014 and 2018. This project required shifting production schedules following an on-set injury to her co-star Dylan O’Brien. She later starred in the 2017 sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
