The first Camphill Community for Children in Need of Special Care opened in 1940 at Camphill, near Milltimber, Aberdeen, marking the formal beginning of a therapeutic model for individuals with special needs. Karl König established this site after fleeing his medical practice in Vienna following the 1938 German annexation of Austria.
Early Career and Training
Born in Vienna on 25 September 1902 to a shoemaker, König pursued a medical education at the University of Vienna, graduating in 1927. His initial research focus involved embryology. Shortly after completing his degree, Ita Wegman invited him to join the Klinisch-Therapeutisches Institut in Arlesheim, Switzerland. This experience influenced his later integration of medicine and anthroposophical principles.

By the 1930s, König served as a paediatrician at the Schloß Pilgrimshain institute in Strzegom, an organisation influenced by Rudolf Steiner. He returned to Vienna in 1936 to manage a private medical practice. Following the 1938 invasion of Austria, he relocated to Scotland at the urging of Dr. Wegman. Upon the outbreak of World War II, he faced a brief period of internment before securing his release in 1940 to pursue his community-based work.
The Camphill Movement
Supported by figures such as George MacLeod of the Iona Community, König expanded the Camphill model significantly. By the mid-1950s, he established facilities to support individuals with special needs beyond school age, including projects in North Yorkshire. During this phase, he collaborated with music therapist Maria Schüppel. In 1964, he relocated to Brachenreuthe, near Überlingen, Germany, to establish a final community before his death in 1966.
