Early Career and Bundesliga Dominance

Starting at Borussia Lippstadt, Rummenigge joined Bayern Munich in 1974 for approximately 10,000 euros. Initially identified as a dribbler, his scoring output surged after coach Pál Csernai introduced structural changes in 1979. Between 1980 and 1984, he led the Bundesliga in scoring three times. During this era, his partnership with Paul Breitner earned them the nickname Breitnigge, helping the team secure two league titles and two domestic cups.

International Performance

Rummenigge represented West Germany in three FIFA World Cups. He captained the squad that achieved consecutive runner-up finishes in 1982 and 1986. His most significant international success occurred at the 1980 UEFA European Championship, where West Germany defeated Belgium in the final. Across ten years, he recorded 95 caps and 45 goals, including scores during the 1982 semi-final and the 1986 final.

Later Playing Years

In 1984, Rummenigge departed Germany for Inter Milan in a deal valued at 5.7 million euros. While his early tenure showed promise, recurring injuries impacted his ability to maintain consistent output. He finished his professional career at Servette FC in Geneva, leading the Swiss league in scoring during the 1988–89 season with 24 goals.

Executive Leadership

Returning to Bayern Munich in 1991 as vice president, Rummenigge became the chairman of the executive board for FC Bayern München AG in 2002. His tenure focused on corporate expansion, national representation, and the infrastructure development of the Allianz Arena. Beyond Munich, he served as chairman of the European Club Association from 2008 to 2017 and later as a representative to the UEFA Executive Committee until 2024.
