To accommodate the display of neon stage lighting, the musician born Karlheinz Bartos shortened his professional name to Karl before the Kraftwerk tour supporting their album Autobahn. This modification occurred as he joined the electronic group for a tenure that spanned from 1975 to 1990, establishing a period of significant productivity for the German ensemble.
Early Career and Kraftwerk Years
Born in Marktschellenberg in 1952, Bartos developed his musical foundation at the Robert Schumann Hochschule. Before his major electronic contributions, he performed percussion in a college band initially known as The Jokers. He earned songwriting credits on albums including Die Mensch-Maschine, Computerwelt, and Electric Café. Beyond his performance duties, he is credited with developing the Numbers beat, which later influenced the track Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa.

Frustrated by the slow pace of production and the perfectionism of band leaders Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider, Bartos departed Kraftwerk in August 1990. He subsequently established Elektric Music in 1992, releasing the debut album Esperanto in 1993. His later project, Electric Music, shifted toward a guitar-based sound in 1998. During this decade, he also collaborated with Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr on the album Raise the Pressure for the band Electronic and co-wrote compositions with Andy McCluskey.
Solo Projects and Recent Activity
Bartos released his solo synth-pop album Communication in 2003, followed by Off the Record in 2013. His output has remained eclectic, ranging from the 2007 soundtrack for the documentary Moebius Redux – A Life in Pictures to the release of the Mini-Composer iPhone application in 2011. In 2024, he collaborated with sound designer Mathias Black to create an electro-acoustic soundtrack for a restored version of Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. He remains an active professional, holding an academic role at the Berlin University of the Arts.
