Haasan received his primary education in Paramakudi before relocating to Madras, where he attended the Hindu Higher Secondary School. During his formative years, he engaged with the T. K. S. Nataka Sabha repertory company, an experience that introduced him to the technical aspects of stagecraft, including makeup and performance. Following an initial appearance as a child actor, he returned to the film industry in 1970 as a dance assistant under choreographer Thankappan, subsequently working as an assistant director.

His transition to lead roles occurred in the mid-1970s, notably through collaborations with K. Balachander in films such as Apoorva Raagangal. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, his work spanned diverse genres, including psychopathic thrillers like Sigappu Rojakkal and musical dramas. He earned three National Film Awards for Best Actor, beginning in 1983 for his role in Moondram Pirai, followed by wins in 1988 and 1997. His total body of work includes over 230 films.
Public Service and Politics
Beyond cinema, Haasan has engaged in public affairs and institutional advocacy. He served as an ambassador for the United Nations in 2007, partnering with the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society. On 21 February 2018, he launched the political party Makkal Needhi Maiam. In July 2025, he took the oath of office as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, representing Tamil Nadu.
