World Indoor Title at Eighteen

At the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, Gezahegne displayed resilience during the 1500 metres event. After colliding with Yevgeniya Zolotova and falling, she regained her footing to win the heat. She secured the gold medal in the final by defeating Gelete Burka. At 18, this victory made her the youngest female winner of an event at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, surpassing a record held by Gabriela Szabo for 15 years.

Transition and Records

Following an injury that forced her to miss the 2010 outdoor season, Gezahegne continued her professional trajectory, eventually acquiring Bahraini citizenship in 2013. Her performance reached a new peak on 3 October 2021 at The Giants Geneva, where she established a world record for the 10 km road race. By completing the course in 29:38, she lowered the existing world record by 5 seconds.
