Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Bank from 1 May 1996 to 30 April 2009, K. V. Kamath oversaw the critical transformation of a traditional financial institution into a technology-driven retail banking powerhouse. His tenure established a blueprint for digital integration that fundamentally altered the competitive landscape of the Indian banking sector.

Academic Foundation and Early Professional Development

Born in Mangalore in 1947, Kamath attended St. Aloysius College before earning a mechanical engineering degree from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka in 1969. He subsequently completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Management at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. He began his career in 1971 at the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India, working within the Project Finance division. During these formative years, he initiated the company's internal computerisation program, a strategic investment that provided a long-term competitive advantage.

International Experience at the Asian Development Bank

In 1988, Kamath transitioned to the Asian Development Bank in Manila, serving within the Private Sector department. His responsibilities involved managing diverse projects across several countries, including Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and China. This period of his career expanded his expertise in multinational financial oversight and corporate governance, serving as an official representative on the boards of various firms.

Corporate Governance and Institutional Leadership

Following his return to ICICI in 1996, Kamath directed a series of acquisitions involving non-banking finance companies, facilitating the formation of ICICI Bank. Beyond banking, he held significant roles at Infosys Limited, serving as Non-Executive Chairman starting in 2011 and later as Lead Independent Director. His leadership portfolio includes the first presidency of the New Development Bank established by the BRICS nations and the chairmanship of the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development. He currently serves as the Independent Director and Non-Executive Chairman of Jio Financial Services.

Board Memberships and Public Recognition

Kamath maintains an active role in global corporate oversight, serving on the boards of the Houston-based firm Schlumberger and the pharmaceutical manufacturer Lupin. His commitment to education is reflected in his membership on the governing boards of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, the Indian School of Business, and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. In 2008, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to the finance industry.
