Academic Background
Born in Tampere in 1971, Halla-aho pursued extensive language studies at the University of Helsinki. He focused on Russian, Croatian, Polish, Ukrainian, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, Old Persian, Old Irish, and Old English. In 2006, he earned a PhD with a dissertation concerning the historical nominal morphology of Old Church Slavonic. Halla-aho entered electoral politics by securing a seat on the Helsinki City Council in 2008. By 2011, he was elected to the national Parliament of Finland, where he served until 2015. He later represented Finland in the European Parliament between 2014 and 2019. Upon his return to national politics in 2019, he led the Finns Party to significant electoral gains. His parliamentary duties have included serving as a member of the Administration Committee and, eventually, as the Speaker of the Parliament.
Leadership and Political Evolution
In 2017, Halla-aho was elected leader of the Finns Party, a tenure that lasted until 2021. His leadership coincided with a notable shift in the coalition landscape after governing partners indicated they would not cooperate with the party under his direction. Despite this friction, he maintained a strong electoral following, securing the highest number of personal votes in the country during the 2019 parliamentary election. In 2024, he participated in the Finnish presidential election, finishing third with 18.99% of the total vote.

Halla-aho has been recognized with multiple national and international awards. These include the Knight First Class of the Order of the White Rose of Finland (2019), the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 2nd class (2023), and both the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Falcon and the Grand Cross of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, both awarded in 2025. He has also engaged in international diplomacy, including a 2023 address to the Verkhovna Rada regarding the Holodomor and a 2024 visit to Kyiv.
