Early Career and Domestic Success

In 1991, Kohler transferred to the Italian club Juventus. He was named Serie A's best foreign player in 1992 and helped the team win the 1992-93 UEFA Cup. By 1995, he returned to Germany to join Borussia Dortmund, capturing another league title in 1996. His performance throughout 1997 earned him the title of German Footballer of the Year.
International Tenure
Kohler earned over 100 international caps for the German national team. His tenure included appearances at three FIFA World Cups and three UEFA European Championships. He was a member of the winning squads for both the 1990 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 1996, cementing his status as a central figure in German defensive history.
Coaching and Management
Post-retirement, Kohler navigated various roles within the sport. He served as the sports director for Bayer Leverkusen between 2003 and 2004 and later managed MSV Duisburg. His time as manager of VfR Aalen ended in 2008 due to a heart condition. He later took a position as director of sports at his former club, SV Waldhof Mannheim, and is currently the U17 manager of Bonner SC.
